ABOUT

Warsaw, 2024.

I was born in Warsaw, Poland. My father was a photographer. In the sixties he was probably the most famous photo journalist in the country. I breathed photography at home from my early years, but have not felt an impulse to photograph myself till when I was about thirteen, after my parents divorced and my father moved out. From that moment on I felt photography could be my own thing.

When in high school, I took photography as one of my B levels. This gave me the basic technical skills and let experiment. While at the university, I decided to quit communist Poland and went to Milan, Italy, where I had to find a paying job. I lucked out to get into finance and soon became a trader for a bank. I lost access to a darkroom. My photography went dormant for several years.

At the beginning of the new century the stress from my job increased substantially and at the same time I have found out the modern pigment printers could deliver a neutral looking, almost silver gelatine like print, which could liberate me from the constraints of wet printing. I have picked up a few analogue cameras and felt that shooting photos was an ideal way for my brain to relax. I only desired to shoot in b&w, which I always preferred. It felt more abstract and personal. Each of my photographs is made on film, always on a single negative. I do not manipulate images afterwards and do not own a digital camera.

In 2009 I moved to Monte Carlo, where I worked for 11 years. I also kept an apartment in France in nearby Nice. While my spare time decreased, my desire to take pictures increased and by then photographing become my second nature. After another 3 years in nearby Sanremo I had to relocate to Warsaw for family reasons. I have retired in 2024 and since then photography is my main focus.

I want to keep this as a passion, to be free from constraints. When someone likes to buy a print, that makes me happy, but monetization is not my goal. The themes of my pictures gravitate around beauty, people, complexity of the world. I am ideally looking for images which are able to show more than what you can find in the picture itself, and make you reflect.
